What to take away
- Separate two jobs Sensor Tower bundles: estimating a market and optimizing your own listing. Most small teams only need the second.
- Estimates of competitor downloads and revenue are models, not disclosures; no alternative sees another app's private data.
- Back My Side, App Radar and Appfigures each advertise a way to start without a sales conversation.
What this alternatives list does and does not establish
This is a publisher-authored alternatives list from Back My Side, not an independent ranking. We reviewed Sensor Tower's public homepage on 9 September 2026 and compared its stated capabilities with our own workflow and with other vendors' homepages reviewed the same day. We did not purchase every plan, run a controlled accuracy test or measure install outcomes. Feature descriptions are vendor-published claims, and we quote no third-party prices because they change without notice.
Sensor Tower's homepage positions the product for global digital leaders and lists large brands as customers. That is a useful signal: it is designed to answer questions a leadership team asks about categories, competitors and advertising spend. A developer with two apps usually asks different questions, and paying for the enterprise answer set is the most common reason to search for an alternative.
What Sensor Tower advertises, and which jobs you may not need
As reviewed, Sensor Tower advertises one platform for every metric: downloads, revenue and revenue per download; active users, sessions and time spent; keyword rankings, ratings and reviews; and digital advertising insights across networks such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube, plus retail media and web performance. It emphasises a consumer panel as its data source and offers both a demo request and a free sign-up. No prices or plan names appear on the homepage.
Split those capabilities into two piles. The first pile, market and audience estimates, matters when you are choosing a category to enter, sizing a competitor or reporting to investors. The second pile, keyword rankings and reviews, is ordinary ASO work. If your unanswered questions all sit in the second pile, you are shopping for a keyword tool, and the enterprise packaging is the cost you are trying to avoid.
Sensor Tower alternatives by the question they answer
The table maps alternatives to the question each vendor's homepage advertises answering. Market estimates and listing research are deliberately kept in separate rows because they are produced from different inputs and fail in different ways. A tool that is excellent at one is not automatically credible at the other.
For estimate vendors, ask how the model is built and what its confidence is for apps of your size. For listing tools, ask how a position is sampled and how absence is displayed. Both questions are more useful than a logo wall.
| Question | Sensor Tower | Closer-fit alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| How big is this category and who leads it? | Advertises download, revenue and usage estimates from a consumer panel | Appfigures market data; AppTweak market intelligence; MobileAction market intelligence |
| Which keywords should my listing target? | Advertises keyword rankings within the platform | Back My Side keyword explorer; App Radar keyword research; AppTweak ASO intelligence |
| Are my sampled positions moving after a release? | Advertises keyword rankings | Back My Side daily tracker with 90-day history; App Radar rank tracking |
| What are competitors advertising? | Advertises ad creatives across major networks | MobileAction ad intelligence; AppTweak |
| How are my own downloads and revenue trending? | Estimates, not your account data | Appfigures via your store connections; Apple's own App Store Connect analytics |
Apple's App Store Connect analytics is the primary source for your own acquisition data
When Back My Side is the right-sized alternative
Back My Side answers the listing-level questions: what a public iOS product page communicates, which apps rank for a phrase in each of 12 storefronts, which competitor terms your metadata does not cover and how sampled positions move day to day. There is no demo call. The first report is free without sign-in and shows the score plus one measured row per section; a free account shows two keywords, and plans from a focused single-app tier upward are listed on the pricing page.
Read Back My Side within its limits. Positions are samples from Apple's public search responses containing up to 200 results, not official or personalized on-device ranks. Popularity, difficulty and opportunity are heuristics, not search-volume counts or download forecasts. It covers the iOS and iPadOS App Store only, has no Google Play data, does not read App Store Connect analytics, does not manage Apple Ads campaigns and does not publish metadata for you. It also produces no download or revenue estimates for other apps, so it cannot replace the market-intelligence half of Sensor Tower.
How to evaluate a Sensor Tower alternative without a procurement cycle
Evaluate any alternative with one real app and a fixed list of ten to fifteen queries you already care about. Record how each tool defines a position, which storefront it samples, how often it collects and what it shows when an app is absent from the sample. Two tools can report different numbers for the same query on the same day without either being wrong, because the measurement differs.
Then check the parts that usually decide the purchase: the number of apps and keywords the plan allows, whether exports are included, whether Google Play or Apple Ads are required for your roadmap, and whether a trial converts to a charge automatically. Write the decision down with a review date so a cheaper tool is not judged for lacking a feature you never planned to use.
Frequently asked questions
Can a cheaper tool tell me a competitor's downloads?
Only as an estimate. No public listing discloses downloads or revenue, so any figure from any vendor is a model. Back My Side does not produce these estimates at all; Appfigures, AppTweak and MobileAction advertise market data, and Sensor Tower advertises panel-based estimates.
Is Sensor Tower's free sign-up enough for ASO work?
We did not test its free tier and cannot describe its limits. The homepage advertises a free sign-up and a demo request. Check the current terms directly, and compare them with Back My Side's free report, Appfigures' free start and App Radar's 7-day trial.
